Rashad Alakbarov is one of the main Azerbaijani artists to come to worldwide attention in recent years. Alakbarov’s installation-based works play with our sensory experience by arranging objects in such a way that when light passes through them, shadows are cast on his canvas, which is usually a bare wall. Within these shadows if you look closely, you will see phrases or symbols from a myriad of different languages as well as cityscapes and cultural symbols. These ‘shadow works’ will play with your mind and have you question your own reality and perception.
There is something otherworldly about his installation that play with various aspects of creation, light and darkness, reality and perception.. and also something incredibly satisfying about seeing something crafted so precisely and skillfully which is sure to please any obsessive compulsive people out there.
