You may not be aware but today is a German holiday with special significance, it is Tag der Deutschen Einheit or as we may know it the Day of German Unity. It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990, when the goal of a united Germany that originated in the middle of the 19th century, was fulfilled again.
Therefore, the name addresses neither the re-union nor the union, but the unity of Germany. The Day of German Unity on 3 October has been the German national holiday since 1990, when the reunification was formally completed and anyone who is familiar with the city of Berlin may also be familiar with Prenzlauer Berg, now an uber hip and trendy place, hipster central some might say, We found this nice short video by Petra Tschörtner from back in 1990 of the district its in German but even if you cant understand its still nice to watch the people from a time not so long ago, but forever written to the history books.
Even the Hoff was there in 1990 singing on the wall to 1million fans on both sides… heres some clips of his performance and memories.
If you really want to sing your teeth into the history check out the following 2 documentaries by National Geographic and the BBC :
If anyone has any stories or memories from back then we’d love to hear about them either in the form or an article or just leave them in a comment under this post.
