They have for years been a guilty enjoyment ; Sharks that somehow got themselves mixed up with tornadoes, snakes that caught a flight with Samuel L. Jackson, the deceased Ghost Shark. These low (low) budget horrors all have something very important in common ; an absolutely idiotic title. Please welcome to their number ; Zombeavers.
Zombeavers was conceived from a title, screenwriter Al Kaplan said the infamous word (I’m guessing with his fourth or fifth beer in his hand)‘ZOMBEAVERS’ to director Jordan Rubin in 2012 and Rubin has stated in interviews that he was then immediately on board.
Zombeavers has a plot that really doesn’t need a summary due to it’s fidelity to B Horror Movie formula ; College kids, cabin, lake, boobs, sex, gory death ; there that covers it. Zombeavers is a lovingly constructed homage to the low budget B Horror movies of yesteryear but it also fits nicely into the current trend of ‘Have To Be Seen To Be Believed’ crazily titled horrors that the SYFY Channel have been making big bucks from.
What makes Zombeavers much more enjoyable than it’s counterparts though is it’s use of practical effects. The Zombeavers are hilarious fat bodied little robotic creatures, no shoddy CGI here. The vicious little Zombeavers also appear in hand puppet form as they furiously shove their way through windows and the hilarity of this is truely epic. Imagine that the Gopher from Caddyshack did a bunch of drugs and then called some Gopher buddies. The resulting gore from the Zombeaver attacks is also wonderfully practical and adds to the fantastic silliness of it all!
Zombeavers is a bad movie, a brilliant bad movie that is bad because a lot of love, time and effort went into making it as bad as it could be. And If you have any doubts that the Zombeavers didn’t have their tongues firmly pressed to their cheeks, stay for the credits where behind the scenes clips show just how much fun was had bringing this crazy film to the screen!
